Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, with Urumqi as its capital, is located in the northwest border region of China. It is one of China’s five autonomous regions for ethnic minorities and the largest provincial-level administrative region in China by land area—covering 1.66 million square kilometers, accounting for one-sixth of China’s total land area.

Its landscape is extremely diverse, ranging from the world’s second highest peak at 8,600 meters above sea level to China’s lowest depression at 154 meters below sea level; from rushing rivers and vast grasslands to bizarre and fantastical Gobi desert landscapes and mysterious desert wonders. • March – April: Apricot blossoms adorn spring. The apricot blossoms of Turpan are the first to herald the arrival of spring, followed closely by the apricot blossoms of Yili, which spread across the grasslands in early spring like an oil painting. The pink and white blossoms adorn the branches, making them a stunning and beautiful sight, and an excellent choice for spring outings.
• May: Warm Spring in Southern Xinjiang. While spring is just beginning in Northern Xinjiang, it’s already in full bloom in Southern Xinjiang, making it the perfect time to travel there. May is also the peak season for the Eastern Tianshan Mountains, especially the Barkol Grassland, where the green grass sprouts almost a month earlier than in the Ili Grassland. The grassland is like a carpet, and the snow-capped peaks are like dark eyebrows, creating a breathtaking landscape painting.
• June: The Splendor of Yili. The Yili grasslands in northern Xinjiang are ablaze with vibrant flowers and lush green grass. The verdant landscapes of Narat, Bayinbuluke, and Tangbula are breathtaking. Along the way, fiery red tulips and golden rapeseed flowers adorn Yili with dazzling colors. In addition, the tranquility of the Xia’er Ancient Road, the vastness of the Kalajun Grassland, and the romance of the lavender fields make June in Yili a poetic and distant dream for countless tourists, truly a “delight unique to Yili.”
• July – August: The whole of Xinjiang is beautiful. The weather gradually cools down, and various fruits ripen one after another, filling the air with their sweet fragrance. The vast grasslands, the tranquil Sayram Lake, and the clear blue sky with white clouds need no words; everywhere you look is a breathtakingly beautiful scene that heals the soul. Only by visiting in person can you truly appreciate its grandeur.
• September: A Colorful Autumn. Autumn in Xinjiang is like a palette spilled by God, a riot of colors, with forests ablaze with hues. The No. 5 boundary marker in Baihaba, the first village in Northwest China, is breathtakingly beautiful. The mangrove valley in Keketuohai reaches its peak viewing period in late September, a tapestry of yellow and red. Baisha Lake, on the other hand, resembles a richly colored oil painting, where every snapshot is a masterpiece.
• October: A Glorious Autumn. After several autumn rains, the leaves of the birch forests in northern Xinjiang fall one after another, their upright trunks standing tall in the wind, exuding a poignant and magnificent oil painting-like beauty. This is the perfect time to visit the desert and admire the millennia-old poplar forests—under a clear blue sky, golden leaves and branches of countless shapes display resilience and grandeur in the desert. Early October is ideal for visiting the Mulei Poplar Forest, while late October offers opportunities to visit the poplar forests of Luntai and Yuli, as well as the Zepu Golden Lake Poplar Forest (a 5A-level scenic area in Kashgar), to experience the vicissitudes and splendor of the poplar trees.
• November to March: A Winter Wonderland. Xinjiang transforms into a pristine winter wonderland, with its enchanting snowscapes of Hemu, the icy charm of Tianchi Lake in the Tianshan Mountains, and the rich folk customs of Kashgar, each possessing its own unique character. Meanwhile, the long winter makes Xinjiang a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts, with skiing, ice skating, and desert trekking attracting challengers from all over to experience these activities.

Leisure tourism in Xinjiang can be roughly divided into two major sections: Southern Xinjiang and Northern Xinjiang. The two have very different characteristics: Southern Xinjiang is mainly characterized by its rich local customs and culture, and is less restricted by the seasons, so it can be visited all year round; Northern Xinjiang is centered on its magnificent natural landscapes, with different scenery in each of the four seasons, and each season has its own unique charm.

Xinjiang boasts a variety of unique attractions, allowing for precise selection based on travel time:

• From April to June, visitors can explore Tianchi, Turpan, Kashgar, and other destinations, experiencing the fusion of ethnic characteristics, cultural relics, and natural scenery. Alternatively, they can enjoy spring outings in Ili and Hami’s Balikun Grassland, where wildflowers bloom, the air is fresh, and spring is in full bloom.
• From June to August, Xinjiang’s tourism season is at its peak, with both the saturation of natural landscapes and the richness of ethnic customs at their best.
• September and October are both the peak season for Xinjiang’s fruit harvest and the golden period for autumn tourism. Kanas, Sayram Lake, and Ili in their golden autumn are breathtakingly beautiful, leaving visitors wanting more.
• From November to mid-March of the following year, Xinjiang offers the best time for winter sports, with soft snow, numerous ski resorts, and readily available equipment. The blue sky, white snow, and spruce trees create a stunning, snow-covered landscape, resembling a fairyland.

Friendly reminder: Xinjiang is a vast region with attractions often hundreds of kilometers apart. Therefore, it is recommended to spend at least 10 days to fully appreciate the beauty of Xinjiang and avoid a rushed trip.

Consumption Level

Xinjiang has a relatively high cost of living, earning it the nickname “Little Shanghai,” mainly due to its high prices for food, entrance fees, and transportation.

• In terms of food: The staple foods in Xinjiang are mainly mixed noodles and pilaf. The price of a normal meal is about 25 – 30 yuan. If you choose special delicacies or have a group meal, the cost will increase accordingly.
• Attraction Tickets: Xinjiang boasts the most expensive scenic spot in China – the Loulan Ancient City, with a ticket price of 3,500 yuan. Non-Chinese tourists need to pay an additional 300,000 yuan to witness its mysterious beauty. Ticket prices for other regular attractions are relatively moderate, varying depending on the scenic spot’s level.
• Regarding transportation: As the largest provincial-level administrative region in China, Xinjiang’s locations and attractions are hundreds of kilometers apart, with a three- or four-hour drive considered short. Currently, Xinjiang’s railway network does not extend throughout the province, operating only between major attractions and cities. One-way journeys often exceed eight hours, and round-trip fares between attractions start at hundreds of yuan. For long-distance travel, air travel or dedicated tourist bus routes are recommended for greater convenience.

Language

Xinjiang is a multi-ethnic region with a rich variety of languages, with Mandarin, Uyghur, and Kazakh being the main languages ​​spoken. Mandarin is widely spoken in cities, scenic spots, and major transportation hubs, making communication easy for tourists.

Jet Lag

There is a time difference of about two hours between Xinjiang and the rest of China. Local work and rest schedules are different from those in the rest of China: people usually start work at 09:30 – 10:00 in the morning and finish get off work at 15:30 – 19:30 in the afternoon. The sunset time is also relatively late, usually around 22:00. Tourists can make reasonable arrangements for their work and rest schedules according to the time difference.
