Key Landscape Features
Kanas Lake is one of the core landscapes of the scenic area. With an elevation of 1,375 meters above sea level, the lake is shaped like a crescent moon, stretching 24.5 kilometers in length, averaging 1.9 kilometers in width, and averaging 90 meters in depth, with a maximum depth of 188.4 meters. Covering an area of 69,000 acres and with a water storage capacity of 4 billion cubic meters, it is one of China’s deep-water lakes and a typical moraine-dammed lake, surrounded by well-preserved Quaternary glacial relics. The clear and tranquil lake water changes color with the seasons and weather. Surrounding the lake is a primeval forest composed of spruce, fir, and Siberian larch, with sunny slopes covered in dense grass. The different plant communities are distinctly layered, offering rich vegetation colors and a pleasant visual experience each autumn.
Visitors can also ascend the 600-meter-relative-height Fish-Viewing Platform (with a sightseeing bus available at the foot of the mountain for an additional ticket purchase) to overlook Kanas Lake as well as the distant green mountains and snow-capped peaks. Alternatively, they can choose to take a boat tour, which lasts approximately 2 hours. The “Three Bays” landscape, composed of Fairy Bay, Moon Bay, and Wolong Bay within the scenic area, is a popular spot for many visitors to stop and take photos. Among them, the hiking trail from Moon Bay to Wolong Bay features a gentle slope and lush trees along the way, making it suitable for a light hiking experience.

It is one of the most visited regions in the northern Xinjiang scenic belt 🌲Currently, the scenic area retains some wooden cabin accommodations and tent accommodations options in local villages, as well as supporting mountain resorts. To protect the natural ecology, a large number of hotels by the lake have been closed, and the accommodation supply within the scenic area is limited. If planning to stay inside the scenic area, it is advisable to confirm room availability in advance. Outside the scenic area, the Jiadengyu area offers more accommodation options at relatively higher cost-effectiveness, suitable for visitors who do not need to catch the early morning fog. Due to its remote location and high logistics costs, dining prices in the scenic area are relatively high, with a focus on northwestern flavors. It is recommended to bring some portable snacks and drinking water before traveling.
